Shinkansen Luggage Rules by Line: 160cm Limit and Tohoku Difference

Which Shinkansen line am I taking, and does the 160cm rule apply?#

Start with the route, not the suitcase. Japan’s Shinkansen network has different operators, and the well-known “over 160cm” reservation rule is not nationwide. As of July 2026, use this table before measuring your bag.

This distinction matters at Tokyo Station. A Tokaido train toward Kyoto uses the reservation system; a Tohoku train toward Sendai does not. Do not book a random back-row seat on a Tohoku train expecting it to reserve the space behind the seat. JR East says luggage space cannot be reserved by itself.

How large is my suitcase when I add all three sides?#

Measure the bag at its widest points, including wheels, feet, and fixed handles:

1. Measure height from the floor to the highest fixed part.
2. Measure width across the widest side.
3. Measure depth from front to back, including a protruding pocket.
4. Add the three figures.

On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and West Kyushu system, the result fits one of these rows as of July 2026.

If forwarding is the better option, follow the luggage-forwarding steps and timing guide. If you only need to leave the bag for a few hours before departure, compare coin lockers and staffed luggage storage.

The rule is based on the outside measurement, not the airline label attached to the bag. A suitcase advertised as “checked size” can still fall on either side of 160cm, so measure the actual bag after packing if an expandable section is open.

How do I reserve space on the Tokaido, Sanyo, or Kyushu route?#

Choose a normal reserved seat that is specifically marked as having an oversized baggage area or compartment. The ticket costs the same as the corresponding ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat. The space behind the last row is shared by the passengers who reserved the marked seats; it is not open storage for anyone in the car.

Reservations normally open with the seat inventory and the number of spaces is limited. If your trip date is fixed, book when you book the train rather than trying to add the space on the platform.

What happens if I did not reserve on a line where it is required?#

As of July 2026, on the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu system, staff can charge a 1,000 yen baggage fee for an over-160cm suitcase brought without the required booking. Staff then direct where the bag must be placed. Paying the fee does not create a guaranteed private storage space, so it is not an alternative booking method.

If you notice the size before departure, ask at a ticket machine or staffed office whether an eligible seat remains. If not, changing trains or sending the bag ahead is more predictable than boarding and hoping space appears.

How does luggage work on the Tohoku Shinkansen?#

The Tohoku rule is different. As of July 2026, JR East does not require or accept a separate oversized-luggage reservation on the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen. Some trains have a luggage area, but it is first-come, first-served, and some trains or cars may not have one.

JR East’s general carry-on limit is up to two items, each no more than 30kg, with total dimensions of 250cm or less and length up to 2m. Personal items such as a handbag or umbrella are excluded from that count. Space can still be the practical limit: staff may refuse luggage that obstructs passengers on a particularly crowded train.

Are strollers and sports equipment treated like suitcases?#

Not always. On the Tokaido route system, strollers, musical instruments, and sports equipment are special carry-on items. They do not automatically need the over-160cm reservation, but the space behind a designated last-row seat still belongs to passengers who reserved it. Reserve that seat if you specifically need that area.

On JR East trains, a bicycle must be folded or disassembled and fully enclosed in a bicycle bag; exposed parts are not accepted. A stroller may be brought aboard unfolded, but it must remain out of aisles and doors. For any unusually shaped item, check the operator’s page for your exact train before arriving at the gate.

If your itinerary crosses from Tohoku to Tokaido services, re-check the rule at the transfer. The operator and line change, so the storage arrangement changes even though both trains are Shinkansen.
